Hatch & Kirk was founded in 1945 by Seattle natives Marshall Hatch and Jack Kirk. Hatch & Kirk met in the early 1940s during WWII while working together at Todd Shipyard. Eventually, they established Hatch & Kirk Diesel Engine Company in Seattle by purchasing surplus military parts and vessels, reclaiming and selling to companies operating primarily Cleveland engines. In 1953, they incorporated the business under the name of Hatch & Kirk Inc. From the beginning, their focus was on building a company that served the operational needs of customers with parts requirements in the commercial marine and rail markets as well as governmental and military operations worldwide.
H&K was an early leader in development of aftermarket parts for several engine lines. Over the decades, H&K became known for renowned innovation, engineering excellence, customer service, pricing and parts availability. H&K became one of the first companies to develop an aftermarket for EMD diesel engines dramatically improving the overall costs of these parts for customers while maintaining quality. H&K eventually became an original equipment manufacturer by purchasing the Cleveland Diesel line from General Motors in 1977. H&K still operates as the OEM of the Cleveland Diesel engine serving a worldwide customer base.
Today, H&K remains one of the global leaders in the manufacture and distribution of diesel engine parts for EMD, GE, Alco, Fairbanks-Morse and Cleveland diesel engines.
